In many ways the final ranking is the opposite of what it should have been. American Airlines’ transcontinental “Flagship” flight in business class with a more extensive service and a private lie-flat seat had every advantage to win this. And yet the airline’s overall attitude and lack of care during boarding and cleaning of the aircraft sent AA straight to last place instead. This may be something the airlines should take note of. Especially right now, you don’t need a lot of bells and whistles to excel at passenger air service. What you need is the right approach, and to get the basics right.

Carry-on bags must fit the dimensions of 22 x 35 x 56cm, including the handles and wheels. In addition, passengers are permitted one personal item measuring 22 x 25 x 43cm. Unless travelling in Basic Economy, passengers are permitted one carry-on bag, plus one personal item. Basic Economy passengers are only permitted a personal item on board.

Checked Baggage

Checked bags must fit within the combined dimensions of 62 inches. The weight of these bags are dependent on the class of service or MileagePlus status. If your class of service allowance is different from your MileagePlus status, the larger of the two will apply:

Comparing the American and United frequent flyer programs

The main difference between the American Airlines and United Airlines Frequent flyer programs is the networks they are a part of. American Airlines is part of Oneworld, whereas United is part of Star Alliance.

Other than that, there’s no clear differentiator between these two programs (as you will see in the descriptions below):

American Airlines AAdvantage

American Airlines AAdvantage is one of the most extensive frequent flyer programs in the industry. Like many other airlines, you earn points for flying, how much money you spend on your tickets, and credit card bonuses. In other words, it’s a decent program, but hardly anything overly generous or revolutionary.

American Airlines is part of the OneWorld program; therefore, you can earn points when flying with any participating airline.

If I had to do it again, I’d choose one of American’s Oneworld partners (such as Cathay Pacific) to get me home from Hong Kong. Flying Cathay Pacific while earning valuable AAdvantage points is flying like a boss.

When comparing the advantage program to United mileage plus, there isn’t all that much difference. The most important thing you need to know is that American Airlines has positioned their frequent-flier program to match United’s (as closely as possible). After all, they are direct competitors vying for the same customers.

• The ways in which you earn miles are the same
• The amount of points you earn for specific activities is the same
• The cost for redeeming award tickets is largely the same

I recommend reading the latest American Airlines AAdvantage information over on the American Airlines website to get a better sense of how generic of a loyalty program it is how it can work for you.

United MileagePlus

As expected, United’s MileagePlus program allows you to earn miles when traveling or purchasing products at select retailers (with a United Airlines branded credit card of course).

Looking at all of the features of MileagePlus, it’s clear that United has specifically designed their program to lure American Airlines flyers. It’s eerily similar to what American Airlines is offering, and quite frankly, I think they are missing a huge opportunity to be unique and offer a real competitive advantage.

The look when you realize that MileagePlus isn’t all that.

Comparing American and United in-flight entertainment

In-flight entertainment is an essential aspect for many flyers, especially on long-haul transcontinental or international flights. Both American Airlines and United have good entertainment options. Let’s compare the offerings between the two airlines:

American Airlines in-flight entertainment

Most flights offered by American Airlines include in-flight entertainment. These often include a variety of different programs such as the latest movies, T.V. shows, and music. On long-haul flights, seat-back screens are standard for both first and economy class.

Wanna know how I know that this is a picture of American Airlines economy class and not United Airlines economy class? Everyone seems to be happy about the video screen blasting advertisements mere inches from their face! That being said, United is catching up, and it won’t be long until you’ll have a video screen on United flights too.

Good news: all flights, except for the smaller aircraft (regional flights), have available Wi-Fi. Some aircraft have entertainment screens embedded in the seats, but as the trend suggests, their fleet does have some aircraft that do not offer this entertainment feature.

In addition to the T.V. shows and music, you can also find other popular entertainment on long-haul flights, including Apple T.V., Apple Books, and Apple Music.

United Airlines in-flight entertainment

United offers similar amenities, though they are going all-in on bringing back video screens in domestic economy. For now, they offer a streaming content service on most flights, which you an access (free of charge) on your mobile device.

404 video screens not found (not yet anyway – but they are coming soon).Note that there is video entertainment in business class on all United aircraft. And it’s pretty good actually.

• On select flights, you will receive a pair of complimentary earbuds; however, they recommend bringing your own pair.
• One unique aspect of United’s entertainment includes DIRECTV, which is complimentary only on select flights. With this access, passengers have access to nearly 100 networks with the latest shows and movies.

A Safer Boarding Process

United Airlines has been boarding their planes from back to front during this pandemic. This is not only more efficient to begin with, but at a time when we are trying to minimize contact with strangers, it’s much safer. Once passengers are seated, they won’t have a stream of other passengers parading past to get to their seats.

On the other hand, American Airlines is sticking to their traditional boarding process of dividing passengers into nine groups based on elite status, ticket purchased and other factors. Usually the passengers in the final boarding groups are seated at the back of the plane, so they are waiting in the aisles, squeezing into middle seats and fiddling around trying to find space for their bags in the overhead bins all while surrounded by seated passengers.

When I fly with American, I am in the first boarding group, and lucky enough to be consistently upgraded to first class. However, I do not wish to spend any additional time in my seat as other passengers board, and have every single passenger on the plane walk past me. Instead of boarding with group one, I hang back far from the madding crowd and wait until they have announced final boarding call before I enter the jet bridge.

In my observations, United Airlines personnel are also more diligent about policing passengers to wear face masks and more consistently wearing their face masks covering both their mouth and nose.

Flight 3: Southwest Airlines – Los Angeles to Oakland

The Southwest flight was the shortest, and it was the only one in economy class. The airline doesn’t even offer a business or first class. And yet in many ways it was the best flight of the three. Why? Because Southwest got all the basics right. It felt throughout the process that the airline took flying in a pandemic seriously. At the same time, cabin crew were light-hearted, friendly and funny. That’s what Southwest is known for, and it proved especially appealing at a time like this.

The flight was simple, but the plane looked and smelled squeaky clean. Middle seats were blocked. There was a service of just water and pretzels – nothing special, but when they could have gotten away with serving nothing at all, it came across as a nice gesture. Boarding was done in such a way that each group of ten people to board were given time to get on the plane so that we didn’t end up all jammed into a jet-bridge. The flight was on time.

When it comes down to it, what more can you ask for?

The airlines in 2019/2020

The largest airline

Following their mergers in the 2000s, each of the new airlines that emerged became (for some time and by some metrics) the largest airline in the world. American Airlines, however, sealed the deal with its merger with US Airways. The combined airline became the largest in the US, and globally, by fleet size, passengers carried, and revenue.

This title, though, has shifted around between the three, both before and after consolidation in the 2000s. In fact, as of 2019, gaps had narrowed which metric you use. In 2019, the blog The Points Guy reported how Delta and United had moved ahead by some metrics.

In the second quarter of 2019, Delta had moved ahead in terms of total revenue. It reported revenue of $12.5 billion, compared with $12 billion for American and $11.4 billion for United.

And in terms of Available Seat Miles (ASMs), United led the way with a capacity of 73.2 billion ASMs. American retained second with 72.3 billion, and Delta 71.8 billion.

American, though, has maintained top place for fleet size and passengers carried.

Much of this switch has been due to operating challenges faced by American. It has suffered more than the other two airlines with the grounding of its 737 MAX. And there has been an ongoing move to introduce new revenue-earning methods and unbundled fares.

While all three airlines have introduced this, Delta was the first to fully introduce basic economy fare and expand revenue streams this way. Going forward, though, as all three airlines become established with new fare systems and the 737 MAX returns to service, the situation will likely even out.

Southwest Airlines has also risen to become a challenger to these top three. It, of course, lacks the global network and routes offered, but has grown rapidly to challenge domestically. By passengers carried, it has beaten United into third place (since 2015) but is significantly behind in reach and revenue (it still makes it into the top 10 airlines globally by revenue).

How have they coped in 2020?

For the most up to date position, Simple Flying took a detailed look at how the three airlines had fared in Q2 2020, with the significant slowdown in aviation globally. This, of course, may not be indicative of where they end up after the pandemic, but it is still an interesting comparison at an important time for aviation.

All three airlines faced a significant net loss. But  United came out best with a $1.6 billion loss. Next was American, with a $2.1 billion net loss. The worst performance was Delta, with a loss of $5.7 billion (figures based on second-quarter results and respective earnings calls).

American fared best in terms of passenger revenue. It reported $1.1 billion from passenger bookings, while United saw $681 million and Delta $678 million.

American also was the most active, significantly ahead in Available Seat Miles (ASMs). But it didn’t necessarily convert this to revenue as well. For a final comparison, consider the vital Passenger Revenue per Available Seat Mile (PRASM) metric (compared against the year previously to show how much things have changed):

• United lead the way with PRASM of 7.6 cents per mile (14.32 in 2019)
• American was next with 6.48 cents per mile (15.22 in 2019)
• Delta achieved just 6.4 cents per mile (15.84 in 2019)

But United was ahead in cargo revenue, reporting $405 million against American’s $130 million and Delta’s $108 million.

Going forward, of course, it is hard to predict how things will turn out. The future demand, especially for international flights, remains highly uncertain. Having the top cargo revenue could undoubtedly be useful for United, as demand remains strong there.

But whatever happens, the big three airlines will likely remain the big three. 2020 has been challenging, but we have not yet heard any thoughts of airline bankruptcies or mergers. We even heard American CEO Doug Parker confirming this in May 2020, and explaining how it thought it unlikely for any of the major carriers.

There is a lot to discuss with the history and evolution of three of the biggest airlines in the world, and we can’t cover everything! Feel free to add any details or extras in the comments.

Why would you choose American Airlines over United Airlines?

As you’ve read so far, both of these airlines offer the same products and services. There isn’t all that much to differentiate them from one another, which is completely opposite of the time that I compared Delta vs Southwest. This is relatively boring in comparison.

That being said, here are a few things you might want to consider if you need to make a choice between the two.

Choose American Airlines if:

• You want access to the Oneworld alliance (and all of the airlines and destinations included in that network)
• You live near one of their fortress hubs / focus cities (Dallas, New York, Miami, or Los Angeles). If you live in or near one of the cities, you’ll be able to go pretty much anywhere in the United States nonstop without making connections.
• You travel to South America frequently. American Airlines has a much better route network in Latin America compared to United.
• You are flying short-haul – I find their short-haul (and regional) network to be better than United’s

Choose United if:

• You want access to Star Alliance and all of the airlines and destinations included in that network
• You travel to Asia frequently. United has a much stronger route network to and from Asia (as well as better partner airlines), and your options for getting around Asia on Star Alliance network airlines are better than Oneworld Alliance network airlines.
• You want a more consistent long haul international business class seat. American Airlines international business class is good, but there are many different seat types across their fleet of aircraft. In comparison, United’s Polaris business class product is common to most aircraft types.
• You live in Houston, Chicago, Denver, or Los Angeles. United Airlines has a very strong presence in these locations, offering nonstop destinations to most parts of the United States.

Ultimately, making a decision between United and American is a personal preference based on two main factors:

1. Where you live
2. Where you typically fly to

I wouldn’t agonize over trying to make a choice between these two carriers. Their products and services are so similar that you’re not missing out on anything by choosing one over the other.
